In Rebecca’s opinion they need…

1) New identities BEFORE they ‘jump’ to Russia. Obviously since the current ones were set up before we left, and many of us are using our real names, they are compromised. Can anyone on the Team forge them or do they need to buy them? Everyone needs to decide what they are doing in Russia. Can those who don’t speak Russian come up with a good reason to be there? Can we buy English to Russian dictionaries for those who need them?

2) Disguises, we all need to look different, they know what we look like and may even have pictures. Again I think it is best this new look be adopted before going to Russia.

3) To change our modus operandi. Assuming they may have watched us prepare for our missions or read our mission reports they know how we work, so we need to change our usual habits. We should all be living or traveling alone, instead of in our usual pairs of husband/wife, brother/sister or father/daughter. This should also make it hard for them to take us all out at one location quickly and easily.

If the Team agrees with the above she suggests…

1) They all travel and live alone, no pairing up. This will be lonely but make them harder to find since hopefully they won’t expect us to do so.

2) They all adopt new ‘common’ names, such as ‘Smith’, ‘Jones’, ‘Johnson’, etc., but not something too obvious like ‘Joe Smith’, ‘Jane Doe’, etc. Don’t assume a nationality that you can’t comfortably pull off. She is going as a Russian, maybe Robert could do the same, but she would suggest Llewellyn not go as Welsh, and Jose (if he is coming) not go as Mexican, just as she’s not going as Irish.

3) They all travel as ‘average’ citizens, no one of wealth or power and the women should pretend to be illiterate. This should again help them blend in, making it harder to find them.

4) They should keep their ear buds off and only use them for designated check in times. Short periods of time, for quick meetings, and only close enough to each other for the signal to carry. (Change to a pattern of frequencies if the buds are capable of it.) Even if a person just gets to the right location, covertly turns it on and just confirms they are okay. This should help them hide if they are looking for out of place radio frequencies like we do.

5) They not appear to ‘make friends’ with each other. They should only interact where social situations make it necessary. In other words not ignore they exist, but not meet each other and become friends. This is too obvious if people are looking for them.

6) That they obviously take a few days to prepare before they do jump, getting new identities, with simple back stories, clothes, and money. They also need to do some research so they know what they can do for a cover once they are in Russia, and develop a plan for checking in with each other and finding the people responsible.

Rebecca is going to…

1) Change her hair and eye brow color*, to dark brown, and use black mascara to darken her lighter lashes. She will cover her freckles with concealer and not use make-up to enhance her features like she usually does. Maybe she will give herself dark circled eyes to make herself less attractive and more tired looking. Let herself look a bit less clean and well maintained, scuffed up broken nails and such. She feels that being too clean looking is another way that they can be spotted easier. If she can find them, or make them, wear fake eyeglasses. (*The first synthetic hair dye was invented in 1907 by Eugene Schueller founder of “L’Oreal”; but until 1930’s ‘Henna’, or henna-type natural dyes, were still the safest, most commonly used, and most reliable hair dye, so she will use a natural dye; darkening hair was also easier than lightening it.)

2) Adopt a common Russian name (Irina Ivanova), and common dress (wool dress, wool shawl, wool scarf) in unassuming colors and patterns.

3) Be illiterate, like most women of the time, and pretend not to know any other language. Act a demure woman of the times, and speak with a quiet voice. Avoid the eye contact of men, not complain, and act as an uneducated person with average to below average intelligence.

4) Be a young widow, maybe 22 years old, with no family left, so she needs to earn a living. Maybe she will try to get a job housekeeping at the U.S. embassy or in the household of someone politically important.

5) Go to a bank and get her money transferred to Russian currency, Rubles, and then make a point of not carrying it all in the same place. She will sew some into the hems of her underclothes, slips and such, and into the lining of her purse and luggage.

1) We already jumped.
2) We can't be alone with no backups in case of emergency. We'll just dissapear one by one.
3) A single women who doesn't speak russian will be extremely conspicuous in Moscow. A city that is not a tourist destination, and only freed the serfs 50 years earlier.
4) Maelonnie should arrive as part of a businessman's party, not as a single foreign person. Single female foreigners simply did not travel through Russia at that time. Those with money always brought servants.
5)Who is traveling with Maelonnie?

Actually we have not yet jumped to Russia. When we left off we had found out the time equipment in the barn belonged to Pamela Felder and we had just gotten finished convincing her were are us. Unfortunately we don't have days to prepare because I had forgotten we were awaiting a lightning storm to power the temporal equipment. It is early morning and at 11pm the storm will hit and we will have to jump, so we can spend the day getting prepared. As far as traveling together we will have to jump together obviously, and hopefully we can get the drop on them immediately. If however we don't and we have to avoid getting detected the last thing I think they should do is stay together, they will be expecting that. I had hoped that Maelonnie would be a young mute beggar or something similar, but did consider that Maelonnie might have to be an exception to this rule. However, I don't think anyone should be wealthy enough to have a servant, we have done this before and they likely know this. So if we need to split up, and Maelonnie isn't comfortable being on her own, I would suggest that she be Rebecca's mute and mentally challenged daughter.

The point of being alone, if we don't get the drop on them immediately, is so that it is harder for them to detect who we are. Obviously once we have a plan to take them out we would coordinate together and try to take them out all at once, or at least those working with her so she is outnumbered. It also might be advantageous to attack from multiple directions, but all that will have to be determined when we see exactly what we are dealing with.

Its not just Maelonnie who won't be able to obtain intelligence on thier own in Moscow. Moscow never had significant foreign visitors (except Russian citizens) prior to WWII. We should be in teams of at least 2 people.

Does Pam have some universal translators or such?

By the way, Sister Maelonnie does speak latin, does the Czar allow non-orthodox christians in the country?

The main point I was trying to make was that anyone can kill us one at a time without us gaining any intelligence if we're alone. Maelonnie is actually the only one in the party who might survive a poison dagger in the back.

We also have a day to sew new clothes. Can we find cloth and pictures in DC? Maelonnie does know how to sew.
